For the past 41 years, The Shepherd Centre has helped more than 1,500 infants and pre‐school
and school aged children who are deaf and hearing-impaired to learn to listen
and speak through family-centred early intervention programs.
Our family centred early intervention program focuses on training parents to seize every
opportunity in day to day situations to teach their children to listen and
speak. Our aim is that children will enter their local mainstream schools in a
fully-integrated environment. We currently achieve this goal for over 90% of
the children that graduate from The Shepherd Centre.
Allowah is a modern 44 bed hospital which cares for children and young people up to the age of 18 with physical and intellectual disabilities such as genetic or chromosomal disorders, birth trauma, cerebral palsy, head injuries, and diseases acquired after birth. Currently Allowah is supporting over 80 families mainly from New South Wales. Allowah is vital in supporting the children as well as their families, and is credited with keeping families together that otherwise would fracture because of the incredible strain placed on them.
Our goal is to make a real difference to the lives of these children and young people with disabilities who, in all probability, may never enjoy many of the stages and opportunities in life that we often take for granted. Our vision in 2004 was to make Allowah a beautiful place for the children by providing spacious communal areas, a sensory room, a day care centre and a spa pool for hydrotherapy. In May 2009 this became a reality after extensive rebuilding work.
